missing cd dvd drivers

I'm trying to do a clean install of Beta 2 64-bit. After clicking on Installat Windows, I get the following message.
"A required CD/DVD drive device driver is missing. If you have a floppy disk, CD, DVD, or USB flash drive, please insert it now. Note: If the windows installation media is in the CD/DVD drive, you can safely remove it for this step.".
Once I click OK, I get stuck in an infinite loop of "No device drivers were found. Make sure that the installation media contains the correct drivers, and then click OK."
Is there anything I can do to get around this issue? I've tried locating 64-bit beta versions of my DVD ROM drivers for Vista but haven't found any. Any suggestions?

I had that same error too Try putting a windows XP disk into the computer, it worked for me. Windows XP fixes Windows Vista

Unfortunatley that didn't work. It's not even checking the DVD drives after I click OK to see if there's a disk. It kept trying to check the floppy drive until I disabled it in the BIOS.

After some searching an some tinkering, I seem to have found the problem. My ASUS motherboard has one IDE channel, and two EIDE channels that use ATA ATAPI drivers. Since my DVD drives were on the EIDE channels, once the installer loaded, it lost all knowledge of these channels since there were no drivers. After moving some stuff around to get my primary HD and DVD on the same IDE channel, setup works fine.

I have an ASUS laptop with the same symptoms--couldn't find DVD driver during setup and no CD/DVD drive shows in the device manager. Any tips on IDE channel tinkering or something to get the drive visible?

Well, my eventual solution was to just re-cable my drives so that one DVD-ROM and my primary HD were on the same chain. Once the first part of the install was complete, I put everything back the way it was and it all eventually worked out.
With your laptop you might not have that option. Check out Asus's download section. You may be able to find some ATAPI drivers there for your laptop. Unfortunately you'll have to put the drivers onto a floppy disk or a USB flash drive. CD isn't an option since it doesn't know about the drive yet. I tried this approach with mine but got some unexpected results. It took the driver and knew what it was. It just didn't find the DVD drives. The weird thing was that one of the drives was now searchable to locate additional drivers, but as far as the installer was concerned, it still didn't exist. Don't understand how that works exactly.

Thanks Keith for the tips. I did some searching around for ATAPI drivers, updating Vista from Microsoft, searching for remedies to errors, etc. and in the wee hours turned in. Somehow little gnomes were at work that night because the next morning I booted up and the system recognized my drive and had assigned a driver to it. I don't get it because I had rebooted a number of times before. Wish I had a solution that I could pass on to others but... Cheers.

Try this, it worked for me. My Asus P5LD2-VM m'board came with a CD with utilities etc. One menu option is " Make ITE8211 32/64 bit IDE driver disc" (floppy). Do this (or download drivers from Asus site and copy to disc). The disc then contains the various driver versions in folders (eg Windows XP). To get the Vista installation to recognise the files, you need to select the right set (Win64, in my case) and copy them to the root directory of the floppy. Insert the floppy when prompted and you can load the driver, and installation will continue. Good luck.

I'm having exactly the same problem with my Asus motherboard (P5W64 Pro) and installing vista 64 bit from a IDE CD/DVD rom drive with no drivers out on the net (and my sata dvd doesnt even show!)
I've tried the IT8211 Drivers but unfortunately thats not worked :mad:
Can someone help? Someone mentioned using a XP cd (-bviously my cd drive dont work at this point in the install so I need to copy the files elsewhere.. What files from a XP CD might be useful so I can put them on a floppy ot usb stick and load them in?

Well... I've been trying to modidy the IT8211 -iteatapi.inf- file in the win64 folder to see if I can force it to think its a vista driver.
So far I've changed [Version] Signature="$Windows NT$"
to [Version] Signature="$CHICAGO$"
This makes the inf file load ok but nothing appears int he box to select. I resume I need to add/modify a
%ITE.DeviceDesc0% = iteatapi, PCI\VEN_1283&DEV_8212&SUBSYS_2A1D103C ; ASUS OEM
line for it to pick it up. Anyone know how I get this line right?
Or.. did peoplke just untick the "onyl use compatible drivers blah blah" tickbox and select one that appears?
Or am I using a driver file set thats total;ly out of date (8211Drv_095003-01.exe or DriverVer=12/14/2005,1.3.2.8 in the INF file...)
